Big Brook Preserve is located adjacent to Big Brook on the north side between Laurelwood Drive and Hillsdale Road.
Boy Scout Troop 290, based in Colts Neck, has adopted this park as its primary in-town service project.
When we are done, there will be a continuous trail, at least 6' wide from Laurelwood through to Hillsdale. This is approximately 1 1/4 miles long. Along this proposed trail are fifteen separate brook, creek and gully crossings. Currently, only about half these have bridges, the remainder have no bridging. The existing bridges are in various stages of disrepair and decay. When complete, all fifteen crossings will have new, pressure-treated lumber contructed bridges with post-hole dug "deadmen" to anchor the bridges securely in place (some flooding has occasionally floated the bridges ).
Initial work was to cut a navigable trail the entire distance. Existing bridges had emergency repairs performed. Nearly thirty Scouts and adults volunteered their Saturday to start this work.
These pictures represent the principle crossings and other points of interest, in order from Laurelwood Drive, heading west along the trail:
